Wildflowers of Andalucia
For one of Europe's most amazing displays of spring flowers the wildflowers of Andalucia win hands down. A carpet of colour can be found in Southern Spain from January to May.
Here are just some of the more common wildflowers of Andalucia that you could come across on your travels:
Barbary Fig
Bishops weed
Broom
Crown Daisy
Dwarf Convolvulus
Grey leaved Cistus
Honeysuckle
Italian Sainfoin
Lavender
Milk Thistle
Orchids
Periwinkle Pink Convolvulus Poppy
Prickley Pear Purple Vipors Bugloss Rosemary Sage Sea Lavendar Spiny Broom Star Thistle Thyme Wild Gladiolis
There is no particular area better than another for walking and spotting wildflowers. Although nearer the coast where the climate is milder they start earlier than the more hilly inland areas. Although of course I'm baised and have to say that around us in the Sierra Sur de Jaen the flowers (as they are in other areas too) are just gorgeous - but to find the best you have to get out and walk, what a hardship! Maybe you'd like to stay in our holiday rental home
Casa Rural El Reguelo
to appreciate the wildflowers and the olive groves - it's a perfect place for peace and relaxation, photography and walking. Between January (in the coastal area) and the end of May is the best time to see the wildflowers in their glory, probably the end of April and early May is best before the real inland heat begins to beat down upon them and you.
This book by Betty Molesworth is a fantastic companion book whether you're out in the wilds of Andalucia seraching for plants or in an armchair learning the names of the wildflowers and planning to out there.
