Ubeda

Ubeda is a city bursting with glorious honey-coloured stone monuments. This along with its close neighbour Baeza is one of the must visits for Jaen province.

Overlooking the Sierra de Cazorla, the main old town is fairly flat and thanks to some of Spain's influential men of the 16th century, it oozes elegant palaces, churches and mansions.

Ignore the sprawling new town and head for the casco antiguo and be spell-bound at the ostentatious beauty of these magnificient reminders of a hugely wealthy past.

Many of these Renaissance buildings were designed by Andres de Vandelvira who is also responsible for the enormous cathedral of Jaen.

The Plaza Vazquez de Molina is a huge plaza almost totally surrounded by 15th and 16th architecture. On it sits The Capilla de El Salvador pictured above from the 1540s and the Palacio de Condestable Davalos now a 4* Parador.
