Las Alpujarras
The Alpujarras name comes from the Arabic al-bucharrat which means pasture. It is the area of small white-washed towns nestled in the mountainous hillsides and fertile valleys on the lower slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
The range spans across the provinces of Granada and Almeria and due to its remoteness it was the setting of two major historical events in Andalucia.
It was the final stronghold that the Nasrids held onto before being defeated by the Christians and then the main point of the rebellion of 1568 by the moriscos.
Despite it being a popular tourist area these days, it holds plenty of charm. Each town is unique and worthy of exploration.
