Route of Castles and Battles
The Route of Castles and Battles joins together some of the most important castles and battles in Andalucia, most of the monuments are within Jaén province although the route starts in Ciudad Real across the northern Andalucían border.
Romans, Carthaginians, Alhmohades, Moors, French and Spanish armies all left their imprint in these lands, leaving Jaén with some of the most important castles in Spain.
The main part of the route in Jaén crosses the stunning rocky Despeñaperros to Santa Elena and ends in Alcalá la Real, some of these great feats of engineering still stand today while others are only ruins, but the history and bloodshed will never fade away.
This is an interesting route that tells many tales and legends as it zigzags down-country to end, with the most impressive of all – The Alhambra Palace and Generalife in Granada.
