Having had reclaimed wooden cable wheels that only lasted a season or two she realised that they needed something more durable, cost effective and able to be left outside in all weathers. Needing a table to cope with minus temperatures and the odd plus fifty she turned to what the Spanish do best ceramic tiles.A great walker and collector of anything useful, Rachel already has a supply of samples and broken tiles she’d collected for a “one day” project, that day had arrived. With the expert knowledge and hands-on help of her builder husband, Nick, she set about making their first patio table. Using the samples and broken bits of tiles she’d squirreled away the couple arranged the tiles on flat board then, when the design was complete, stuck brown parcel paper on the design, added another flat board on top and turned the whole thing over. This is so the tiles lay flat, which for a table is a necessity, then built up a plaque using tile cement and wire for strength the table top was born. Nick made a metal frame and legs to sit the plaque in and thus the first patio table that began www.mosaics-for-patios.com was born. The second table they made for their vacation home was a gecko design made from tiles they’d collected from a builders merchant that were headed for a landfill site. She also decorates the traditional Moorish roof tile with mosaic designs for use as decoration or as light fittings for which Nick makes a selection of metal brackets for hanging them on the wall. Rachel has a passion for geckos, hundreds of them live in and around their Andalucían home and they feature in a lot of her mosaic work, she also wrote a story about them was short-listed in the UK’s Academy of Children's Writers competition.
