Omar and Zoraida

Legend of Omar and Zoraida.

One famous legend in Jaén says that there was in Moorish times a lord called Omar at the Castle of Jaen. He was a brave knight who was desperately in love with Zoraida his wife.

One evening he was called down to the city and so off he went on horseback. That night he didn’t return so after a sleepless night Zoraida went to look for him.

She found him dead having been stabbed in the back as he was on his way back to the castle. In her anguish she embraced his body and wailed. When passers-by found her they tried to separate her from her husband, but found that she too was dead but with tear still falling.

As her tears reached the ground they became mixed with water oozing from the previously dry ground and from then on a spring runs known as Caño Quebrado.

Siince that day on certains nights in February nights, two figures are supposed to appear walking arm in arm towards the castle.
