Olive Fiesta Martos

Olives, Olive Oil and Olive Fiesta Martos

Every year the new harvest is celebrated before it begins with the Fiesta de la Aceituna or Olive Fiesta which takes place every 4-8th December in Martos town. Tradition and culture bring the town together in with a spirit of thanksgiving for the imminent harvest.

Thousands of hoyas - the typical picnic lunch that the olive grove workers would have taken with them, are given out on the streets. This consists of a chunk of bread which is hollowed out with your fingers and is then filled with olive oil, bacalao – salt cod and olives.

The gathering of the olive harvest then begins. They work every day of the week, unless it rains, to bring in the harvest in the shortest time possible. The olive mills work a 24-hour day milling, pressing and refining the oil.

When the harvest is over another fiesta is held to celebrate its end!
