Golf Málaga

Golf Málaga

The Málaga region has the greatest concentration of courses in Andalucia with in excess of 40 golf courses available to play.

To the west the five-star Finca Cortesin resort near Estepona is a world class course, now home to the World Matchplay. The course opened in 2007 but has already built a reputation for fine quality.

Estepona Golf boasts the longest hole in Spain at 568 metres long – named Ski Run, while Doña Julia Golf, a new facility, is further west and has been built to USPGA standards. The most westerly course in the region is La Duquesa, introduced in 1989 with a very English feel with its narrow fairways and raised greens.

If you’re looking for golf around Puerto Banús, Los Flamingos Golf has two courses to choose from. It plays host to European Seniors Tour tournaments and provides a tough challenge. The 18-hole El Paraiso is situated just outside Puerto Banus in the valley at the foot of the Sierra Bermeja mountains.

A short drive further away from the coast is Atalaya Park, a high-class resort which has two courses – the Old Course, a largely flat parkland course, and the New Course, which includes some hilly terrain.

Further into the hills above Puerto Banús and Marbella, the Marbella Club, a real challenge for even the best players, offers a taxing day of golf with buggies recommended for a round.

Nearby is Monte Mayor, a tricky course with narrow holes surrounded by trees, with the 27-hole La Quinta course also posing a stern challenge courtesy of some very tight fairways. sandwiched in between Monte Mayor and La Quinta is Los Arqueros, the first Seve Ballesteros design which opened in 1991.

Golf Malaga, Los Arqueros

Just north of Marbella lies “Golf Valley”, an area which includes three courses in close proximity. Los Naranjos takes its name from the orange trees around the course and has played host to international tournaments, Real Club de Golf Las Brisas, a well-established course that requires accuracy rather than power and Aloha Golf which boast spectacular views of the Peñablanca mountains.

Closer to the Marbella coast, Rio Real Golf Club is one of the original courses and is a flat course perfect for golfers of all abilities, while the 2000 addition Santa Clara is more suited to higher handicapped golfers with shorter holes. Next door, Marbella Golf is even shorter but being a hilly course it provides more of a challenge.

There are a number of courses lying between Marbella and Fuengirola, Santa Maria Golf Club with a fairly short course that is perfect for newer golfers.

The same can be said of the picturesque Cabopino, which overlooks the port of the same name. Miraflores Golf Club, meanwhile, is a mainly hilly course where buggies are recommended.

La Noria Golf Club is a friendly nine-hole course situated in the Cala de Mijas bay and Greenlife Golf Course is another family one being a nine-hole par-3 course. Close by, Santana Golf Club is a flat course suitable for all abilities and La Cala Golf Club is a hilly track that poses a tough task.

Malaga Golf, El Chaparral

El Chaparral Golf Club is one of two courses situated close to Fuengirola with the interesting 18-hole course which sits on the edge of the city. Further east, the Torrequebrada Golf Club is a well established course situated between Fuengirola and Torremolinos.

There are two courses in the mountains north of Mijas, Alhaurin Golf Club with 45 holes available. There are 27 holes to play on the full course as well as 18 par-3 holes and a nine-hole short course. At over 300 metres above sea level, Laura Golf Club is the highest in the region with great views and 27 interesting holes lined with olive trees.

There are four courses in an around the city of Málaga, the most well-known is Parador Golf Club, the original course opened in 1929.

Guadalhorce Golf Club a short drive from Málaga airport is made up of two very different loops of nine holes – the front nine an English parkland style setup and the back nine featuring elevated greens and taking in hilly terrain.

The other two courses are to the east of Málaga with Anoreta Golf Club offering a pleasant 18-hole course and a tough test afforded at Baviera Golf Course in the Sierra de la Almijara.
