GR7 Walking Route
Andalucia
One of the most famous walking routes in Andalucia is the GR7 which forms part of the European Route 4. GR stand for Gran Recorrido or long journey and this route is indeed long and originally hard.
In Andalucia the path covers a distance of 1,250km, all of which was signposted, but these days many signs have disappeared or are barely visible.
The entire footpath runs from Tarifa in the southwest corner of Spain where the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet. The path runs from Cadiz province up through Spain, across France, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Rumania and Greece.
The GR7 runs through Alcornocales Natural Park and Grazelema Natural Park in Cadiz province, the pretty town of Ronda and the rock climbing area of El Chorro in Malaga province into Granada
the route covers some of the National Park of Sierra Nevada where the path climbs to 2,000m above sea level giving glorious views of the surrounding countryside.
Into the north of Andalucia, it crosses the Natural Park of the Subbeticas in Cordoba, into Jaen where it passes through the Sierra Magina and into the Spain’s largest natural park of Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas where it crosses briefly into Granada province before leaving Andalucia on its long trek to Athens.
