Easter Processions

Statues, regalia and gold reign the streets throughout Andalucia during the Easter festival. Carved figures of Christ or the Virgin are taken on a pilgrimage from their sanctuary around the streets and back to their resting place.

Some of these figures in the larger towns and cities are works of art by famous artists, Francisco Salzillo y Alcaraz (1707-1783) is one such late master whose 18th-century works can still be seen.

Almost every town and village celebrate Easter or Semana Santa the holidays vary slightly in that the holidays are Thursday jueves santo and Friday viernes santo instead of the Friday and Monday.

Streets buzz with an incredible atmosphere but it's not only at this time of year street processions take place, each chapel has their own "fiesta" on the same weekend every year. The Virgin of that chapel is processed around the streets as well as two or three obligatory nights of partying.

Some towns go for the real thing and host a live reproduction of the Passion Play complete with crosses and a crucifixion. Fuensanta de Martos reproduces a live spectacle every Easter.
