Castles of Andalucia

La Iruela

La Iruela is the most dramatically perched castle I've ever seen, and the most inspiring, dangerous and unvisitor-friendly too! I hope it's now improved, but in the safety aspect only.

Just 1km from the town of Cazorla the gateway town into Spain's largest national park, Parque nacional de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas. La Iruela is a must to add to your trip.

It was on a family jaunt that La Iruela was discovered, we'd stopped at the enormous gorge near El Chorro to see the vultures - which we did.

We also wanted to see the waterfall, El Chorro, of which we'd seen some impressive photo's, but didn't get any ourselves. We did in fact miss it altogether because there was no water. Due to several seasons of drought it wasn't running!

On the steep rough road with pine covered slopes we dropped into La Iruela. The road suddenly became narrow and lined with houses within hands reach of each side of the car, in front loomed a sheer crag with the ruins of a Knights Templar castle atop, awesome.

History of La Iruela coming soon.
