Its Autumn time, fruit is on the trees and the pomegrantes in my garden are on the verge of splitting to revel their ruby seeds. Did you know? That the pomegranate, called Granada in Spanish is the emblem of the city of Granada. The Moors named Granada after the fruit, maybe for its jewel-like seeds.

The ll Andaluca Bike Race will take place from February 26 to March 2 2012. As last year it will be in the provinces of Crdoba and Jaen. Hopefully good weather will allow an early start to the racing season. More than 17,000 euros prize money will be awarded for the elite men's and women's categories. The six-day race will be in the same area but with different routes. The organisers said "Those who rode the Andaluca Bike Race 2011 will know the area but shouldn't expect the same stages; these are new and even better" For more information visit the race website at www.andaluciabikerace.com.

Does anyone have any reccommendations of books about Spain that theyve read and enjoyed? Im building up my review section and would love some ideas from others. At present Im reading Two Middle-Aged Ladies in Andalucia by Penelope Chetwode, an account of her horse ride through inland Spain in 1963. The next on my reading pile is A Slow Walk Across Spain - Walking the Camino de Santiago by Karen Manwaring. Next Saturday 23rd July sees the 1 indoor de Enganche "Ciudad de Martos" take place on the Carretera de la Fuensanta in front of the Opel garage. Horses with carriages will perform different stunts to test the drivers skill. Starts from 8.30pm, Spanish time so probably wont begin until 9.15ish. This is part of the inter-province league.

I really enjoyed my visit to the Mariposario last week while staying on the coast. We all agreed, 12 and 18 year old son and 80 year old mum, that it was worth the visit. Hot and humid but delightful with a huge array of jewel-like crysalises and amazingly marked butterflies. I bought our tickets from Letsbonus.com and paid 5 Euros per adult. On the day the two OAPs were 7.50 and 5 Euros for the 12 year old. Adults would have been 8.50 Euros which I think a little steep.

International Air Festival in Jaen 8 - 10 July

Started by Parisian Marc Petiot who flew his paraglider over the Segura de la Sierra in the 1990s, the International Air Festival has grown each year. Some of the best aerobatic pilots gather around El Yelmo peak, at 970 metres, and perform stunts which nearly 15,000 spectators watch every year. Entrance is free and aside air displays there are acrobatics, paragliding, film screenings, music and workshops for the whole family. The only thing that costs is a tandem flight if you want to take to the air with a professional pilot.

Spain has Best Beaches in Europe

For two consecutive years Spain has been awarded the most Blue Flags out of the 41 European countries taking part in the Blue Flag programme. A total of 3012 beaches took part with 511 Spanish beaches having been given the eco award, 66 of them in Andalucia. Each beach has to adhere to strict environmental standards and be nominated by the local authorities for the award. The Blue Flag programme is run by the non-profit, non-governmental Foundation for Environmental Education. The criteria for qualifying has become more rigorous over the years and are based upon Environmental Education and Information, Water Control, Environmental Management and Safety and Services.

Oak Power Communication (OPC) recently studied the position of Spanish tourism in a study of 600 international journalists. According to their figures Marbella enjoys the best brand image of Spain rated 7.9 out of 10 by journalists closely followed by Madrid at 7.3 and Barcelona at 7.1. Marbella was also voted the third trendiest and most fashionable city in Spain as well as having the best beaches in Spain according to the study.
